John Bessler

The legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson believed in the “decisive moment,” which he described as “The marvelous mixture of emotion and geometry, together in a single instant.” For over 30 years, John Bessler has been creating pictures that express the very particular qualities of a specific moment. Whether shooting people, interiors, food or cityscapes and landscapes, his photography conveys the poignancy inherent in the fleeting nature of time. Each frame evokes a sense that this particular assemblage of forms, this exact quality of light and this unique feeling will never again coalesce in quite the same way. An avid traveler, Bessler has recorded countless of these perfect moments across a vast terrain that has encompassed the United States, the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, Europe and China.

Bessler’s work has appeared on the pages of many prestigious publications, including Traditional Home, Veranda, House Beautiful, Country Home, New England Home and Food & Wine. He was also principal photographer for Edith Wharton—A House Full of Rooms: Architecture, Interiors, and Gardens (Monacelli 1996), and has contributed photography to various other books, among them: Nate Berkus’s Home Rules (TK publisher 2005), Susanna Salk’s Decorate Fearlessly (Rizzoli 2014), Tricia Foley’s Life|Style: Simplicity at Home (Rizzoli 2015) and TK author’s Prints Charming (Abrams 2016).

John lives in a small lake house in Northern New Jersey with his wife Lydia, an architectural photographer, and their daughter.
